Extracting Fine-Scale Wind Fields from Synthetic Aperture Radar Images of the Ocean Surface

چکیده
ork is described whose long-term goal is the extraction and analysis of fine-scale wind fields from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the ocean surface. Results are based on a field experiment in which a SAR image was taken nearly simultaneously with in situ aircraft-based turbulence and radar altimeter measurements. These results show a direct correlation between SAR “streaks” and atmospheric roll vortices. They also show that rolls generate mesoscale variability in the surface wave spectrum, implying that SAR streaks are due to ocean surface roughness elements created by both the instantaneous and time-averaged multiscale wind field. We are using these results to refine an analysis aimed at transforming radar backscatter into fine-scale marine mean wind speed. (

The Impacts of Typhoons on the Ocean in the Pacific (ITOP) program is a multi-national field campaign that aims to study the ocean response to typhoons in the western Pacific Ocean. The main goals are to understand the formation and dissipation of cold wakes and how ocean eddies affect typhoons. The NATO Undersea Research Centers (NURC) activities within ITOP are related to extracting high reso...

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a useful and efficient tool for providing high-resolution images from sea surface wind fields. Wind field analysis based on SAR image descriptors makes the estimation of wind direction and speed possible. A total of 168 fully polarimetric synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images are selected together with the buoy measurements of ocean surface wind fields and high-frequency radar measurements of ocean surface currents. Our objective is to investigate the effect of the ocean currents on the retrieved SAR ocean surface wind fields. The results show that, compared to SAR wind fields that are retrieved...

The technical approach in this project involves three types of models: (1) the two-scale electromagnetic scattering model, which relates the radar backscatter to the surface wave spectrum, (2) the wave action model, which describes the relationship between the surface wave spectrum and the near-surface wind field, and (3) atmospheric dynamical models that describe or constrain the spatial varia...
